Hui Ji Temple Heritage Park

Presented by:

Lee Parks, Director of AECOM Shanghai Office

Zhang Li, Project Landscape Designer

To start the 3rd Shanghai Landscape Forum, AECOM presented Hui Ji Temple Heritage Park landscape design. Located in Tangquan Town, Nanjing, Huiji Temple is a Buddhist temple of profound culture and history. The original temple architecture was destroyed leaving only a neglected park and an insignificant structure. With urban development and the revival of faith, the local government intends to restore the temple grounds, transforming it into a heritage park covering 19.15ha to include a new temple building and landscape restoration of the adjacent green.

The original temple grounds is the site of highly valuable relics – three ancient Ginkgo trees aged 1485, an ancient well and four pedestals dating back to the Song dynasty. Given the significance of the site, the design team faced the following diverse considerations: protecting three ancient trees, preserving Buddhist history and culture, meeting sightseeing and meditative needs of growing visitors, while addressing the anticipated effects of climate change. Through an artful application of cultural and ecological sustainability principles, landscape restoration and design of the park creates a natural and spiritual space with imbued meditative atmosphere. The result is a skillful integration of spatial needs with protection of cultural and ecological resources and enhancing public identity and local characteristics of the town. Phase 1 was completed and opened to public in 2017.

To close the presentation AECOM showed previews of Phase 2 which will further rehabilitate the traditional Chinese mountain-water landscape layout, complementing the new temple complex to create a spiritual space with an imbued cultural atmosphere.

Company: ASPECT Studios

Topic: YESTERDAY ONCE MORE 昨日重现

Presented by:

ChiaChi Chen, Associate Landscape Architect of ASPECT Studios Shanghai Studio

As a member of Shanghai Landscape Forum (SLF), ASPECT Studios was invited to present for the topic Culture Heritage. Associate landscape architect of ASPECT Studios, Chiachi Chen shared insights on two projects in China from the perspective his hometown, and discussed the appearance and charm of a place, which lies in her change, and can look back on her past, and the project story behind the scene:

Vanke Chongqing Xijiu Plaza used to be a brick-made hospital lies at West -Suburb of Chongqing.  It was built in 1953 and serves as a memory place for local people. Now, it is transformed into a functional commercial complex, which integrates residential, commercial and business. It becomes community combines city memory and culture.

The design captures the site’s heritage and its distinct of nature to inherit and promote the culture heritage of Chongqing. The Chongqing mountains and rivers are reflected with graphic pavement patterns by bricks, linear water features as art. Lighting is a holistic part of the overall design comprising catenary cables and feature up-lighting to Fig trees. The plaza encourages engagement and activity between people within the community, those from different age groups with different interests, resulting in a dynamic, memorable and innovative urban space which is still distinctively Chongqing.

The Dream Center, a project based on the introduction of the animation brand dream factory, has a collision between the famous brand culture and the industrial site culture. It also shoulders the demand of urban green space in the urban development and continuity of the water bank space in the West Bank of the Huangpu River.

Shanghai Dream Centre

Shanghai Dream Center will become a cultural place which mixes new and old, carrying the urban development, industrial sites, and entertaining culture of water bank. As we look back on its past industrial mark, we created a new waterfront life and memory on the West Bank of the Huangpu River, because of the introduction of the new entertainment culture and the high quality green space design.

Shanghai Dream Centre

The charm of a place lies in its transformation and how it can look back nostalgically to its past. The spirit of a city can be transformed into memory through all sorts of lives and experiences, and eventually reserved in the form of heritage. Ways to preserve the value of heritage are changing with modern life, urban development and function transformation of spaces. Our current projects proactively leads the development of urban spaces and also well preserved the past and future of heritage landscape.

Guangzhou Pearl River Urban Revitalization

Presented by:

Han Yu, Senior Landscape Designer

Yang Zhang, Project Manager

Xinran Zhang, Landscape Designer

The idea of demolishing buildings is often associated with negative impact during Chinese urbanization. However, strategically remove deteriorating building may provide opportunities for highlighting landmarks, enhancing quality of open spaces and improving living conditions. What matters is the balance between demolition and preservation.

Pearl River witnessed the history of the development of Guangzhou. Most part of the western Guangzhou near Pearl River was developed throughout the 20th century, and as the city moved east, this once vibrant location was left with chaos and low‐quality neighborhoods.

Three key areas were identified as study areas, and each of these areas has very distinguishing characters representing different eras of Guangzhou ‐ from the northern riverfront with deeply rooted colonial memories, to the historical Buddhist Temple just across the river, and to the east where a traditional craft school is situated.

Based on site survey and analysis of the existing conditions, specific positioning and redevelopment proposals are suggested for these three sites, aiming to redefine and boost the neighborhoods with entirely different culture heritage. The colonial building site are designed to encourage historic tourism, where the main effort was put into heritage restoration, in order to retrieve the original look, with only minor alternation to the surrounding for tiding up. Across the river, by opening up the space around the temple, it restored the connection between temple, canal and pearl river, which was meaningful is the history. It also gives opportunity to increase public open space for the neighborhood. On the east, where the traditional school is located, the poor conditioned buildings are suggested to be removed with new infills to create an art and craft community.

公司Company: SASAKI

主题Topic: Rediscover the Beauty of Countryside

Presented by: Dou Zhang, Director of Sasaki Shanghai Office

Sasaki joined the third Shanghai Landscape Forum, represented by Ms. Dou Zhang, director of Shanghai Office, and Mark Dawson, managing principal of Sasaki.

Dou’s presentation explored how landscape can help preserve and celebrate the traditional lifestyle. She started the presentation with the reflection on the emigration from China’s countryside. The big gap on the living standard between the cities and the countryside has emptied many villages.

Hesilu Village Landscape Master Plan was introduced as a case study to find the Chinese Dream at the new countryside. The project focuses on preserving and leveraging existing mountain setting, agricultural landscape, and village culture, through envisioning a new model of countryside economy, to achieve a destination of ecology, recreation, culture, education and tourism.

The spatial design concept is built upon such vision and unfolded through four story lines, mountain, water, flower, and village. The design connects and promotes the unique landscape features in the area while rediscovering the village culture as a spiritual legacy, enabling tourism as a major economic drive for the village. Local economy would further allow villagers to sustain a contemporary life style and enhance the overall quality of the village.

The presentation further emphasizes the key role of landscape in the Countryside. Natural setting and agricultural landscape are the unique assets of the countryside. The settlement pattern built upon such setting represent a great importance to the local culture and life style. Respecting and integrating with such spectrum is critical in planning the future of the countryside.

Mark delivered the closing notes revisiting the highlights of the presentations. He encouraged the practitioner to think critically on the issues over cultural heritage in landscape, and to build the heritage of tomorrow.

公司Company: ATKINS

主题Topic: From natural Heritage to cultural Heritage从自然遗产到文化遗产
Presented by: Yuan Xia, Landscape Associate of Atkins Shanghai Office

From natural heritage to cultural heritage, what is strongest connection between them? It is the human’s creation. And to create such harmony between human and nature is our most important responsibility and mission as a landscape architect.

As all know, that in the past 40 years, urbanization in China is the major tone of development. While achieving economic success, such massive and rapid development comes at a cost: we start to ignore the city’s culture, and identity.

We, landscape architect should take our responsibility and make a change to bring our city’s character back, and what’s more, to add some new flavor, to make city even more unique at all time.

During this process of this culture creation, landscape architects should look beyond the present. We create unique cultural landscape place not only for our generation, but also for the next generation. After many years, weathered through years, cultural landscapes may become the cultural heritage by then.

Karamay is an Oil City of northwest china.   "Oil spring" and "Yardang geomorphology " is the major natural heritage of the city. The first step we are doing is sorting out the tourism product system, in the progress we found, reservoir and ski field can be developed together: digging lake and heaping Hills can make perfect cut and fill balance. And both can be positioned as tourist destinations in the future:

-保留场地内的工业文化遗迹,设置纪念公园;

-将单一功能滑雪场升级改造成四季休闲综合体;

-增加5条雪道,和2条四季雪道,丰富滑雪体验;

-Based on Yardang geomorphology with the height difference of 50 meters, we design 11 lakes and 21 watercourses;

-A Memorial Garden was set while keeping the oil field facilities;

-Promote the single ski field into a four-seasonal leisure resort with

-Adding 5 ski slopes and 2 all seasonal ski slope to enrich the winter experience;

Adding four seasonal facilities like summer ski, multifunctional lake, ski village, green valley and Boutique Hotel.

These 2 Parks is under construction according our original design intention.

Our design starts from the two-natural heritage of "oil spring" and "Yardang", integrated the history of "oil industry”, to Create 2 new cultural landscape: "Yardang water park" and "four seasons ski resort" - two new cultural landscape with strong regional character, it does enhance the cultural character of the city.

We believe after many years, the water park and ski resort will become two new cultural heritage.

公司Company: SWA GROUP

主题Topic: From Reminiscence to Reestablishment

Presented by: Peichen Hao,  Landscape Designer of SWA Shanghai Office

When we talk about Cultural Heritage, especially as designers, we always refer to its materiality or its potential to be materialized. It’s a word that gives power to our design that provides a layer of ambiguity lingering on top of our carefully defined contemporary life. However, we also sometimes neglect some aspects of culture or heritage. It’s important, but it’s not always the key. When we choose to protect or to neglect, we are choosing an attitude or a method to balance the old and the new, to choose whether we create a projection of the past to our tiny slice of time, or to bring our knowledge into the country untouch and carefully hide something for the future.

▲ DAHUA MANANMABEI PARK

Dahua Mananmabei Park, Tianjin Binhai Cultural Center Landscape, and Shenzhen Bay projects all represented local culture in their own way, from representing the process of urban demolition and transformation, to preserving parts of the site and creating a new urban culture, to completely borrowing experience from a foreign culture and embed it into a newly developed city, each site has their specific condition yet landscape always have the potential and suitable methods to influence the site and thus create new cultural characters for local development.

▲ TIANJIN BINHAI CULTURAL CENTER LANDSCAPE

▲ SHENZHEN BAY

We may not always have worldly known historic heritage to work with, but we can show our respect to history, to memories, to the locals, to contexts, to build upon these heritages of normal life. “Creating culture” is too complex a project that simply need time to develop and mature. However, we can create a platform, a space for culture to grow. We can modify the relationship at the interface between human and nature to encourage sparks of new life styles, that in one day, our intervention may vanish, but the influence may always stay in people’s blood.
